Mildred Hires, 92, of Metcalf, passed away at 2:51 a.m. EDT Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Ind. She was retired after working many years as a cook at the Colonial Kitchen Restaurant in Chrisman and later several years as a home health aide for Lincolnland Home Care.
A service celebrating her life is noon Wednesday, March 28, at Templeton Funeral Home. Burial follows in Young American Cemetery, north of Hume. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hires was born Feb. 14, 1926, at Casey, the daughter of the late John and Luebell Coleman Johnson. She married Ancil Hires Feb. 7, 1944, at Paris, and he preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1987.
Survivors include two daughters, Maxine (Bill) Hill of Clinton, Ind., and Daisy Foote of Chrisman; a brother, Dennis Johnson of Paris; four sisters, Freda Ashworth of Paris, Mary Roberts of Mattoon, Ruby Pinnell of Decatur and Annie Walsh of Paris; seven grandchildren, Doug Hill, Bruce Foote, Josh Foote, Jeremy Foote, Nacina Bilyeu, Christy Yeasel and Brian McGinness; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Virginia “Corky” Hires and Beverly Postelwaite; three sisters; four brothers; and one granddaughter, Hope Yeazel.
Mrs. Hires was a member of the Paris Southern Baptist Church and of the Chrisman Shining Stars Red Hat Society group. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, doing find a word puzzle books and playing Yahtzee. She also enjoyed watching the “Golden Girls.” She never missed an episode and could recite them word for word when they were on. Above all else, she loved spending time with her family. She will be remembered as a loving mother, sister and grandmother.
